Johnny decides to master time for the fact that Johnny doesn't really have much else to do. HE initially attempts to do master several other activities, but ultimately he finds them to be quite boring in nature and quickly loses interest. Johnny discovers that he can measure time by paying attention to what nurses come to him. From this he can determine that they come to him at two hour intervals and that the nurses differ from nighttime to daytime. He eventually becomes so adept at measuring time that he starts to imagine himself doing the normal things he would've done, at the time in his life prior to his injuries.

Like any human being, Joe quickly lost interest when he tried to reread books and recite math problems. Even when he wanted to count the individual seconds of each day, he failed. He thus was able to find some measurement of a day by the nurse's visits, which I believe were actually around 4 hours apart, and from the heat of the sun's rays. When he accomplished this, I was amazed that he managed to count to one whole year, and as you stated at the end, he was able to imagine a New Year's Day like that of before the war.
I agree with you Owen but Evan also makes a good point with how he failed to count to tell time because he realized he would be up all night counting. Also Johnny uses the heat from the sun to use as another indicator of time. Also it was amazing how he could keep a mental tally of days throughout the year and realize his "New Year".
